The College of Nursing Sciences, Mater Misericordiae Hospital Afikpo, is a Catholic Institution which began as School of Nursing, Mater Misericordiae Hospital Afikpo as far back as 1952. It is one of the foremost institutions established by the mission in order to meet the sudden geometrical demand for modern health care services following the establishment of Mater Misericordiae Hospital in 1942. In the early 90's there were very few training institutions for nurses and the acute need for professional nurses that will render daily and effective nursing care to patients became a burden to the hospital, hence Mater Misericordiae School of Nursing became a solution.
The School is Located at Newsite area of Afikpo North Local Govenment Area of Ebonyi State and has trained over 15,000 nurses who are currently practicing nursing in different parts of the world. At the beginning, Alexander Iroha from Ishiagu in Ebonyi State and Francis Ogar of Cross River State were the pioneer students who trained and qualified in the year 1954.
After the Nigerian Civil War, the School gained transformative touches when Rev. F.r Alphonsus Iweke took over as Hospital Administrator from Medical Missionary of Mary-Sisters.
Thereafter, he handed over to Afikpo Indigenous priest by name, Rev. Fr.Dr Innocent Ekumauche Oko, in October, 1991. Currently, Rev. Fr. Dr. Simon Isueseni is the Hospital Administrator of the Hospital and he is building unimaginative blocks of transformational leadership in favour of the hospital and the schools.
The School survived several accreditations by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and has maintained full accreditation status over the years.
In a bid to meet the globally acceptable academic qualifications for the students and in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria regulation and standard, the School upgraded in infrastructure, manpower and mode of operation to a Status of College . Meanwhile , the National Board of Technical Education is solely the body responsible for the approval to award ND/HND certificates to qualified students across the country, Nigeria.
The College has three main departments; Nursing, Midwifery, and Public Health Departments with a view to expanding it to accommodate other disciplines like Community Nursing, Pharmaceutical Technology, Science Laboratory Technology and Hospitality Management and Tourism departments.
The Administration of the College is mainly a direct responsibility of the Principal Officers of the College.
